Olive Lindsey Wakefield Collection on Langston Hughes
Scope and Content Note
The Langston Hughes papers that are available at the Auburn Avenue Research Library are a collection of approximately 55 items. Much of the material is correspondence to Mrs. Olive Wakefield of Springfield, Illinois during the years 1945-1955. Play announcements; copies of periodicals which include his poems; and reviews of some of his works are also included. There is also a bibliography of his work and announcements of his speaking and reading engagements. Autographed copies of three of his books are included.

Historical Sketch
Langston Hughes (1902-1967) was an internationally known poet, playwright, lecturer and literary artist of the 20th century. He was born in Joplin, Missouri and grew up in Kansas and Ohio. He moved to New York in 1920 to begin study at Columbia University. It was in New York that he became the most famous writer of the Harlem Renaissance. He traveled extensively in Europe, Africa, and Mexico and his literary accomplishments reflect his experiences around the world.

Overview
The collection consists of letters from Langston Hughes to Olive Lindsey Wakefield (wife of Paul Wakefield) of Springfield, Illinois from 1945-1955. The often lengthy letters discuss Hughes' activities including his writings and appearances, family and friends, and thoughts on a variety of subjects. Also includes a bibliography of his works, announcements of his speaking and reading engagements, play announcements, reviews of his works, and periodicals which include his poems.
