Scope and Content Note
The collection, created by Atlanta University scholar David Frederick Dorsey, consists of programs, newsletters, flyers, and clippings related to dance and other performing arts between 1972 and 1990 and pamphlets and reports dated 1928 and from 1979 to 1983 documenting the political situation in southern Africa. The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, the Atlanta Ballet, Jomandi Productions, Clark Atlanta University student groups, and international dance troupes are represented within the collection.

Historical Sketch
David Frederick Dorsey Jr. was born in Philadelphia Pa. on June 30, 1934. After earning graduate degrees from the University of Michigan and Princeton University, Dr.Dorsey began his teaching career at Howard and New York Universities. A respected and articulate scholar, lecturer and editor, Dr. Dorsey has served Atlanta University in many capacities including Associate Dean and Faculty Assembly President. A contributing and participating member of the Modern Language and College Language Associations, Dr. Dorsey edited the papers of the African Literature Association meeting at Indiana University in 1979 and a special issue of Callaloo: A Journal of African-American and African Arts and Letters and serves on the editorial board of Phylon: A Review Of Race And Culture, founded by W.E.B. DuBois. He is a Professor of English and African-American Studies at Clark Atlanta University.

On April 13, 1991 David Dorsey gave an extensive collection of playbills and clippings dating from October 1975 to March 1991, to the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African- American Culture And History Archives Division.
