Scope and Content Note
The collection is approximately 1 1/2 cubic feet. It contains six (6) volumes of Capital Avenue Elementary School Publications, Highlights, from 1972 through 1973; Cooper Street Elementary School Publications, from 1970 through 1972; biographical information about Dr. Claude C. George, Jr. and some members of his family; clippings from the Atlanta Constitution and Atlanta Daily World, from 1957 through 1964; a copy of Dr. George's resume, detailing his many accomplishments, his contribution to the African-American communities and abroad; and photocopies of Mrs. Gwendolyn Lampkin George, first wife of Dr. George. Also included in the collection is a Diploma from Tuskegee Institute, which was awarded to Mr. Claude Clarence George, Sr., in 1912.

Historical Sketch
Dr. Claude C. George, Jr. was born on November 22, 1922 in Atlanta, Georgia. He received his B. S. at Tuskegee Institute in 1948, MA education in 1949 at New York University, EdS in 1972 and EdD in 1981 at Atlanta University.
Since 1950, when he launched his professional career as an instructor for Texas Southern University, Dr. Claude George, Jr. has collected more than 27 awards for excellence. Some of his awards include Boy Scouts of Georgia Achievement, Urban League Community Award, Jewish Education Alliance Achievement Award (NY), American Association of Physical Education, Health and Recreations Physical Fitness Award, St. Stephen Memorial Baptist Church Performance Award, YMCA Achievement Award and the "Man of the Year in Sports," Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, to mention a few.
In 1941, Ms. Dorothy Lee Bolden married Frank Smith. Within a short period, the couple divorced, and she married Abram Thompson, Sr. She is the mother of six children - Frank, Avon Butts, Dorothy Ingram, Altenmiece Knight, Abram, and Anthony.
Dr. Claude George's career as an educator began in 1951. He served the Atlanta Public Schools and community for 39 years. Some of his duties included: Coach at Atlanta Public Schools, 1951-1969; Director of C. C. George Day Camp, 1956-1969; Counselor, 1957-1969; School Principal, 1969-1973; Director of Voluntary Transfer Program for Desegregation, Atlanta Public Schools, 1973; Director of Alternative Education Programs, Atlanta Public Schools, 1978-1983; Director of Adopt a Student Program, 1983-1988; Director of International Student Ambassador Exchange Program of the Council of the Great City Schools for the Atlanta Public Schools, 1984-1988; supervised student ambassadors to Zimbabwe, Africa, in 1987. He also directed Job Placement Program. In addition, he was the administrator of the David T. Howard Center, Atlanta Public Schools.
Dr. George was inducted in the Tuskegee Athletic Hall of Fame in 1975. He is a life member of the National Education Association, Atlanta Chapter of the United Nations Association, and Japan-American Society of Georgia. He is also a member of the Urban League, NAACP, YMCA, and Boys Club of America.
Dr. George is married to Dr. Herma J. Hightower. He has four (4) daughters: Ms. Collette George Scott, Ms. Yvette George, Ms. Valerie Hightower, and Ms. Kimberly Hightower.
