Historical Sketch

Samuel L. Davis, an alumnus of Morris Brown College and a dedicated educator since 1930, served as an instructor at Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta. In 1944, Davis filed a lawsuit in the District Court of the United States for the Northern District of Georgia, Atlanta, on behalf of himself and other African American teachers and principals in the Atlanta Public School System. The lawsuit claimed that the Atlanta Board of Education had, over a long period, consistently pursued and maintained a policy of paying Black teachers and principals less than their white counterparts, despite possessing the same qualifications, certifications, experiences, and responsibilities. The case, Davis v. Cook, culminated in a landmark decision in 1948, where the court ruled against these discriminatory salary practices, marking a significant victory in the fight for racial equality in education and setting a precedent for future civil rights litigation.

Processing Information

Processed by Regina Broh-Grolin in 2002

The biography is lacking most important information, which are needed in order to complete that portion of the finding aid - Biographical Sketch. I have conducted further research from several library sources, hoping to find something written about Mr. Davis, but I found nothing relevant about him. At any rate, my search is continued, and a "Biographical Sketch" will be processed as soon as one if available.
