Biographical / Historical

The Women of Color Arts and Film Festival (WOCAFF) was created by Iyalode Productions under the leadership of Mojisola Sonoiki. The goal of the festivals was to showcase the work of emerging filmmakers, musicians and artists. The festivals aimed to forge links between women film directors, industry players and the general public that was interested in films about other cultures.

The festivals were held in collaboration with the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History, in Atlanta Georgia. The first event was held in 2005 as Atltanta's 1st Women of Color International Film Festival. The goal was to showcase the stories, styles, perceptions and creativity of women of color filmmakers. The name changed in 2007, the 3rd year of the festival, to Women of Color Arts and Film Festival. The change was made to more clearly reflect the mission to celebrate the accomplishments of women of color in various art disciplines. Along with the film festival, there were visual art exhibitions and muscial showcases.

The festival occurred annually from 2005 until 2012, with a hiatus in 2011. WOCAFF's mission was to be at the forefront in promoting the leadership capabilities of women of colour media makers/artists; the Festival served to expand the global dialogue on women’s issues through the presentation of positive empowering images in film, music and art.
