Biographical / Historical
The Early Edgewood/Candler Park BiRacial History Project, founded in 2006 by Amy Meyer Burns, aims to preserve and celebrate the African American history of Atlanta’s Edgewood and Candler Park neighborhoods. This collection includes deeds, directories, maps, articles, and papers documenting the area’s rich heritage. This project supports community-based education and restorative justice by reconnecting descendant families and current residents with their historic roots.
The project collaborates with local organizations, including the Antioch East Baptist Church and Georgia State University, to research and document the neighborhood’s history. It also places interpretative Legacy Markers at significant African American sites, honoring the contributions of early residents. By engaging the community in these efforts, the project ensures that the stories of the area’s African American pioneers are recognized and preserved for future generations.
