Laura Brown papers
Scope and Contents
The Laura Brown papers document her career and community involvement spanning more than 50 years, including her positions as a paraprofessional with the Atlanta Board of Education, political activist, volunteer worker, and community leader.
The collection contains awards and certificates, correspondence, printed materials, photographs, teaching materials, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, programs, and scrapbook pages.

Biographical / Historical
Laura Brown was an evangelist, a paraprofessional with the Atlanta Board of Education, a political activist, and an aide to Coretta Scott King.
As a paraprofessional, she worked with the John F. Kennedy Middle School exceptional children’s program, was chairperson of the middle school’s Beautification Committee, sponsor of the John F. Kennedy cheerleaders, chairperson of the hospitality PTSA, and was vice president of the Benita Brown Bryant and Prayer Wonder Hood Scholarship and Award Fund, Inc. which benefitted the school’s exceptional children in memory of her daughter.
On April 22, 1979, she was ordained at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she served as associate minister.
She had a long and distinguished record of serving her community, city, state, and country, including, among others, such diverse areas as: voter registration, PTA, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Social Change, the Morris Brown College Advisory Board, the Planned Parenthood Advisory Board, the Atlanta Mental Health Association, the Grady and Graves Homes Tenants Association, and the Fulton County Democratic Party.
