Scope and Contents

This collection includes documents related to William A. Harris Hospital, which was founded by Nellie Hannon's sister. The hospital was established by Sadye Harris Powell, an African American nurse from Atlanta born in 1899, and her husband, surgeon Charles W. Powell. The hospital was named after Sadye and Nellie’s father, William A. Harris. The "Blacks-only" hospital facility was located on Hunter Street, near Washington High School (Hunter Street is now known as Martin Luther King Jr. Drive). Other documents include information on Alex Haley and the Palmer House. Nellie's other sister married into the Palmer family.

Nellie Harris born February 2, 1887 married Wylie Hannon. They had two children Virginia Ross Hannon and Courtney Wynell Hannon. The family resided in Atlanta, Georgia.
