Mabel Vernon Alford Collection
Scope and Contents
The Mabel Vernon Alford Photograph Collection consists of pages from a scrapbook containing photos from the 1920s and 1930s. Many of the individuals in the photographs are unidentified, and the locations of the photos are also unknown.
This collection offers a visual representation of Black life in and around Chattanooga and Atlanta during the first half of the 20th century. The scrapbook includes short poems and small snapshots of young people and family members of Alford.

This collection is available for use only on the third floor (Achives Division) of the Auburn Avenue Research Library. There are no restrictions on research use of the collection, but permission must be obtained for reproduction of materials for which the Research Library does not hold copyright to research only for "Fair Use" as defined in the copright law (Title 17, United States Code). Also permission must be obtained to publish reproductions from materials for which the Research Library does hold copyright for one time use only
Biographical / Historical
Little is known about the creator of this scrapbook, Mabel Vernon Alford, from Chattanooga, Tennessee. Alford was born around 1900 and attended college in the 1920s. Her photographs feature friends, family, and classmates. A few images show young people socializing on campus, at the beach, and at their homes.
