Biographical / Historical
The church fan was once a small part of the black church experience. These hand fans were made from cut heavy paper and then stapled to a wooden handle. During the days before central air conditioning the congregation would utilize these fans during the hot months. These fans would feature the images such as those of prominent African Americans, general images of black children or families, that often featured advertisements of black businesses on the opposite side.
