Scope and Contents
This collection of Carter’s Department Store covers the years 1948 to 1964. The collection contains advertisements, stationary, customer credit records, general ledgers, check stubs, financial statements, invoices, receipts, journal sheets, ledgers, overdue notices, personal correspondence, pharmaceutical price lists and signed checks.

Biographical / Historical
Marcus and Yetta Danneman were a prominent atlantan Jewish family. The Dannemans’ had extensive correspondence with the King family, one of their stores, Danneman’s Supermarket was across the street from Ebenezer Baptist Church. The Danneman’s catered extensively to the African American community in both of their stores, Danneman’s Supermarket and Carter’s Department Store; they also contributed to various organizations and charities.
This collection focuses on Carter’s Department Store, co-owned by Yetta Danneman. In the collection there are customer credit records, journals, invoices, advertisements and order forms. The collection also features personal correspondence of each of the Danneman family members. Also of note; check stubs, prescription pads, drug information pamphlets and journals from two other businesses. Chestnut Street Pharmacy and O.K. Drug Company, it is unclear what connection the Dannemans had to either business.
