Historical Sketch
Dr. Alpha Omega Campbell (1889-1977) was a medical doctor in Tallahassee, Florida from about 1913 until the mid 1950's. He was born June 9, 1889 in Quincy, Florida. After receiving his medical degree in Boston, Mass., he returned to north Florida to practice medicine in 1913. He served white and black patients alike, and in 1947 he opened a two story, 20-bed hospital next door to his residence. The Laura Bell Memorial Hospital was one of the region's first privately owned and operated facilities serving blacks. The hospital existed from 1947 to about 1956 when Dr. Campbell was convicted of manslaughter and served 3 years in prison.
After his criminal conviction the hospital was forced to close and most of his possessions were sold off to pay outstanding debts. He moved to South Florida to be near relatives and died there Dec. 13, 1977.
Dr. Campbell and his wife, Maggie Lou Ferrell Campbell, had 3 daughters: Zillah, Laura Bell, and Alpha Omega.
