Eugene M. Martin, a native of Atlanta, served Atlanta Life for fifty-seven years. He graduated from the college department of Atlanta University in 1912 when he began his career with the company as an agent. Serving later as sick claim adjuster, manager, and auditor, he was subsequently elected as company secretary in 1920. In 1947 he became first vice president, in which position he served until his death in 1969. In addition to his service at Atlanta Life, Martin was elected president of both the National Insurance Association and the National Alumni Association of Atlanta University. He was a staunch supporter of civil rights, having served at the national level as the vice president and board director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
