Jesse Hill, Jr. files
Scope and Contents note
Jesse Hill, Jr., a graduate of Lincoln University in Missouri and a recipient of a master's degree in actuarial science from the University of Michigan, began his career with Atlanta Life in 1949 as an actuarial assistant. He became actuary in 1955. During his tenure at Atlanta Life, Hill was an effective community activist, engaging in the fight for equalization of Black teachers' salaries, voter registration, and desegregation of schools and public accommodations. Upon Norris Herndon's retirement in 1973, Hill was appointed president and chief executive officer of Atlanta Life. He also assumed many positions in the community's public and private spheres. He was appointed to the State Board of Regents during Jimmy Carter's term as governor, served on the board of directors of Delta Airlines and Rich's, and became the first Black president of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. Active in politics as well, Jesse Hill chaired the congressional campaign of Andrew Young in 1972 and the mayoralty campaign of Maynard Jackson in 1973. The subject files of Jesse Hill include correspondence to company officers, other Black insurance companies such as Afro-American Life, Guaranty Life, Pilgrim Health and Life, and Keystone Life. The files also document Hill's involvement in professional and civic organizations, such as the National Insurance Association, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The files contain correspondence from former mayors, Maynard Jackson and Andrew Young, and former president, Jimmy Carter. A total of twelve boxes comprise the Hill subseries ranging in date from 1965 to 1984. Most of the records, however, are dated in the 1970s.
